Melvin Mar

ABC's “Fresh Off the Boat“
Executive Producer

Melvin Mar is originally from Los Angeles, and comes from a long line of immigrants from China via Hong Kong. His great grandfather initially settled in Bakersfield, California, and as more of the Mar family immigrated as “paper sons” over the next 100 years, they expanded into  Chinatown in downtown Los Angeles before permanently planting roots in the San Gabriel Valley’s Montebello, California. His father’s side of the family established a thriving bean sprout restaurant supply business servicing southern California’s Chinese restaurants.

While his parents were hoping that he’d go into a “Chinese parent approved” career in medicine, law or accounting, Mar gravitated toward the entertainment industry, and began his career as an intern at Kopelson Entertainment where one of his main responsibilities was picking up matzo ball soup at 12:20pm every day at the old Stage Deli.

Mar parlayed his intern experience into his first job at Dreamworks SKG and then at Scott Rudin Productions, where he built a solid relationship with “Orange County” director Jake Kasdan. They’ve worked together since on films including “The TV Set,” “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story,” “Bad Teacher” and “Sex Tape” and the hit television comedy “New Girl.”

Besides serving as executive producer on “Fresh Off the Boat,” Mar served as an executive producer on “Weird Loners” .

Currently, Mar and Kasdan have an overall deal at Twentieth Century Fox Television where they are developing comedies and dramas for cable and network television. Mar lives in Los Angeles with his family and is a lifelong Lakers fan, despite the last five seasons of heartbreak.
